School description > Research projects

The list of projects, with the respective titles and the software requirements are provided below:

Project no. 1 by Prof. H. P. Singh, University of Delhi

Modeling the surface brightness profiles of galaxies for classification and parameter estimation

Software requirements:

  1. IRAF (Image Reduction& Analysis Facility) with extra layered packages from Space Telescope Science Institute (STSDAS - Space Telescope Science Data Analysis System). IRAF as well as the layered packages can be installed from:http://astroconda.readthedocs.io/en/latest/installation.html
  2. GALFIT- a data analysis algorithm that fits 2-D analytic functions to galaxies and point sources directly to digital images. GALFIT can be installed from: https://users.obs.carnegiescience.edu/peng/work/galfit/galfit.html

Students:

  • Gogoi Rupjyoti
  • Verma Mahendra

Project no. 2 by Prof. Ranjan Gupta, IUCAA, Pune, India

Object segregation and classification using automated tools

Software requirements:

  1. Plotting software
  2. Matlab/Python etc for using ANN/RandomForest etc based routines
  3. Galaxy Data set from:http://www.stsci.edu/ftp/catalogs/nearby_gal/sed.html
  4. Star Data set from:http://www.bo.astro.it/~eps/uvblue/uvblue.html
  5. Reference: Bora et al New Astronomy 14 (2009) 649–653

Students:

  • Magadi Ranganath
  • Ghosh Soumavo
  • Menon Sitara

Project no. 3 by Prof. Kanak Saha, IUCAA, Pune, India

Modeling kinematics of barred spiral galaxies

Software requirements:

IDL (preferred), or GDL, IRAF, Fortran, Linux OS (must).

Students:

  • Leca Jerome
  • Lescaudron Sandrine
  • Leung Ying Chi
  • Thomas Guillaume
  • Zhuang Yulong

Project no. 4 by Prof. Philippe Prugniel, Univ of Lyon, Lyon

Study the population of some objects (galaxy or star clusters) using full spectrum fitting with either ULySS or Steckmap

Software requirements:

For ULySS, the students need to have IDL on their laptop, and yorick for Steckmap (installing yorick is not a big issue; installing IDL is more complicated, as it needs a license, that most students manage to get from somewhere).

Students:

  • Zou Siwei
  • Parikh Taniya
  • Siudek Malgorzata
  • Isabelle Vauglin
  • Nkundabakura Pheneas

Project no. 5 by Prof. Julien Devriendt, University of Oxford

Setting up and running cosmological simulations

Software requirements:

    1. mpgrafic: to generate initial conditions. Can be downloaded from://www2.iap.fr/users/pichon/mpgrafic.html
    2. ramses: to run the simulations. Can be downloaded from:https://bitbucket.org/rteyssie/ramses
    3. IDL/fortran compiler/FFTW and preferably MPI library

  • Gurung López Siddhartha
  • Mancillas Brisa
  • Muñoz Sardaneta María Minerva
